Pileated Woodpecker, Dryocopus pileatus

After many attempts, I finally got a picture (plus movie!) of the Pileated Woodpeckers around here. They've been going at the birdfeeder, too, but they're so shy they take off at even the hint of a picture being taken.

That is truly awesome. What great birds. Were the hairs standing up on the back of your neck when you took that video?

Actually I was too busy trying to hold the camera still to think about the hairs on the back of my neck.

The pileateds have been all over the place since I got here, but darn are they easily spooked. They have a pretty amazing call when they fly off, I'd love to get that on a video.

Love the pics and video. I saw one of these puppies at work in the fall and it was a most impressive bird.

So, those birds pecked out that deck furniture from rotting logs?

Wow.
