Miscreant would be an improvement

I noticed this post first thing this morning

I find I begin dreading a new work week on Sunday afternoon. It was Friday only a minute ago!

Anywho, maybe this will help:

The WSJ, "Climate-Industrial Complex", and the Big Lie

Here's the WSJ editorial:

Mr. Lomborg is director of the Copenhagen Consensus, a think tank, and author of "Cool It: The Skeptical Environmentalist's Guide to Global Warming" (Knopf, 2007).

This is certainly true of climate change. We are told that very expensive carbon regulations are the only way to respond to global warming, despite ample evidence that this approach does not pass a basic cost-benefit test. We must ask whether a "climate-industrial complex" is emerging, pressing taxpayers to fork over money to please those who stand to gain.

Bjorn Lomborg? Who is that guy?:

Australian National University academic, John Quiggin, writing in the Australian Financial Review in March 2002, pointed out the number of refereed publications Lomborg has produced on statistical or other scientific analysis of environmental issues "is zero".
.
The concern over Lomborg's misrepresentation of the science was so great that three complaints were lodged with the Danish Committee for Scientific Dishonesty, which Lomborg describes as "a national review body, with considerable authority". [8]
.
The committee found "the publication is deemed clearly contrary to the standards of good scientific practice". [9] They stated "there has been such perversion of the scientific message in the form of systematically biased representation that the objective criteria for upholding scientific dishonesty ... have been met".
.
Back to the WSJ editorial:
.
Spain has been proclaimed a global example in providing financial aid to renewable energy companies to create green jobs. But research shows that each new job cost Spain 571,138 euros, with subsidies of more than one million euros required to create each new job in the uncompetitive wind industry. Moreover, the programs resulted in the destruction of nearly 110,000 jobs elsewhere in the economy, or 2.2 jobs for every job created.
.
This sounds familiar! Cue George Will:

The Spanish professor is puzzled. Why, Gabriel Calzada wonders, is the U.S. president recommending that America emulate the Spanish model for creating "green jobs" in "alternative energy" even though Spain's unemployment rate is 18.1 percent -- more than double the European Union average -- partly because of spending on such jobs?

It is true that Calzada has come to conclusions that he, as a libertarian, finds ideologically congenial. And his study was supported by a like-minded U.S. think tank (the Institute for Energy Research, for which this columnist has given a paid speech).
.
The WaPo must be cracking down on poor George, making him print a disclosure.

In any case, here's Gabriel Calzada, per the NRDC.

ExxonSecrets.com reports that the "Center for New Europe" - where Gabriel Calzada is a visiting fellow - has received $170,000 form ExxonMobil since 1998. Calzada also is tied into the Heartland Institute, another well-known hub of climate science denial.

Yet these energy industry funded hacks have the nerve² to warn about the "Climate-Industrial Complex".

² This clown, Bjorn Lomborg, even had the gall to allude to President Eisenhower's famous quote:

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

If the Wall Street Journal were ever to take this as a warning rather than as a goal, I'll eat my hat.

P.S. Many of our Senators have sold their souls to the Oil, Gas, and Coal Industries. Wind farming? Not so much. (Thanks Cliff, for the link.)

Thank you, Stu.

My Senator, Sherrod Brown, was experiencing a high volume of calls and I was referred to the state offices at (888) 896-6446, (option 2), Columbus.

ITTDGY: Public Health Care Option! Don't let the DINOs get you down! (I already knew Sherrod Brown was a strong proponent of the public option.) Oh by the way, I supported Senator Brown in the 2006 election, and I even donated to him, and you have me on your snail mail list, too.

Staffer: Thank you for calling, Senator Brown is a strong proponent of the public option.

ITTDGY: I know, but I can't call DiFi (for instance), I don't live in her state, and I've never supported her for anything.

Staffer: (laughing) We'll pass your message onto the Senator. Thanks again for calling, and what's your zip code?

ITTDGY: zipcode.

Obama: oh fuck off

C Todd!

Todd: aren't you surrendering to the regime?

Obama: hey i know you have the attention span of a puppy on crack but I don't - next question!

Poor Chuck.

Who's gonna tell BG?

P.S. Regarding the Grapefruit Chupacabra challenge...It is too soon to say whether Chuck Todd, LouD obbs, or Senator James Inhofe is the real chupa. But this is what will be left of the others:

Mountain laurels

I find my best hunting is up here on the mountain top, in the clearing for the power lines.

Here we find a herd of mountain laurels. They have gathered into a defensive formation.

After a long stalk and a quick chase, I managed to cut one of the calves away from the herd.

Now for a quick hike back down the mountain. Here is one I planted in 2006. It seemed fine in 2007, but suddenly died towards the end of the year.

In the morning sun, the next day.

You might notice the maximum security fence surrounding the laurel. Of course, I wouldn't want he/she/it/plant/Kalmia latifolia to wander off. The laurel is confused and frightened in its new home, and might get hit by a car if it strayed. But there is more to it than that, and therein lies a tail. Or two. Or a lot.

To be continued...

FOR THE ZOMBIE

DO NOT advise me to use a Neti Pot. There’s almost no situation I can imagine where I would use a Neti Pot, and not just because it’s the sort of thing you can guarantee will show up on BoingBoing: “Incredibly Cool Steampunk Neti Pot.”

P.S. Righteous Leftous Bubba has submitted an entry to The Journal of LOL Althouse poetry - own goal category, in the comments.

UPDATE: This blog is currently the number 3 search result for The Journal of LOL Althouse Poetry. Proud to Announce, and such as.

Bon Appetit

Today (yesterday, technically), I had the chance to read the Columbus Dispatch while waiting for a lunch order on the ground floor of my orifice building.

Next to this editorial by Paul Krugman, our local fishwrap chose to place this jonanism: Left wing likes to play connect the dots.

...or to ponder whether a militant pro-life extremist really needed a talk-show host to tell him anything he didn't already know about one of less than a dozen doctors in the country who still performed third-trimester abortions.

But, never mind. Such details don't matter when you're trying to delegitimize people.

Not to mention, deligitmize murdered people, eh Jonah?

But now there's some history to slaughter.

Again, just as Hitler did, he hails socialism as the solution to the West's problems.

Is it too much to hope for a footnote?

P.S. On the same day: Bill Kristol

Wingnut welfare - the gift that keeps on taking.

UPDATE:

Dear Mr. Goldberg,

I read your column, "Left wing likes to play connect the dots", in the Columbus Dispatch (June 15, 2009).

You wrote "Again, just as Hitler did, he hails socialism as the solution to the West's problems."

I've read about World War II and Nazi Germany extensively. I highly recommend William L. Shirer's "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich".

I do not recall any instance of Hitler hailing socialism, let alone as the solution to the West's problems.

Could you provide a citation?

Thank you,

ifthethunderdontgetya

UPDATE The 2nd:

Glenn Greenwald weighed in on the Doughy Pantload on June 12.

And then, finally, we have Jonah Goldberg actually anointing himself as the leading opponent of affirmative action on the ground that it unfairly penalizes and victimizes his group and allows achievement for reasons other than merit. This is someone who might be the single most compelling poster child for the ability of white males to advance in America for reasons having to do with everything except merit.

That's what I meant to say!

Also, here's RB.

P.S. The Pantload never responded to my email. Pfft!

Stuart Rothenberg has had it.

He shan't be back.

During the show on which I appeared, Matthews referred more than once to Republicans as "Luddites" and took every opportunity imaginable to portray them as crackpots. The show's topics inevitably pander to the most liberal Democratic viewers and present Republicans and conservatives in the least flattering of terms.

Evidently, Stu missed the years of Matthews pandering to the wingnuts while Cheney and his lackey, the shrub, were destroying our future. Or else he was fine with that.

Eff 'em.

H/t Digby.
