Three Cold Deer

Carmi's Thematic 279
With the cold and persistent snow cover, the deer have been a lot less shy of photographers lurking on porch decks. Once they take what they want from the compost pile, it's off to some bark from a sugar maple.

Here we have some Carolina Wrens enjoying a nice bowl of old, cold hamburger grease:

Last but not least, some pre-snowfall birds:

A Friend With Limoncello Is A Friend Indeed

Limoncello in Berkeley Springs.

Closeup:

Here are Bambi and friends, anticipating B^4's arrival:

How about a Sachem, Delaware, or Fiery Skipper? Everyone can cast their vote.

P.S. More deer and antelope more deer play:

Deer Fences

My contribution to TexWisGirls' Good Fences #22:

In front of the house in West Virginia I have some mountain laurels. Here's what happens if one doesn't have a deer fence:

At the side of the house, one has been languishing for a few years. (But living...because it has a fence!) So I finally moved the entire kit and kaboodle to the front.

I had some helpers!

Foggy Mountain Deer Orbs

UPDATE: Carmi has posted his 200th Thematic Photographic: - Abstract

It occurred to me that you can crop your pictures to tell the story you want to tell. The first here is a crop from "rainy morning geese" above. And the 2nd is another of Lake Siri.

Here is the above picture, uncropped. And yes, it was taken before 7:06 A.M. Sunday morning. Thanks, Notorious D.O.G.!

Ashburn Stag

My contribution to Eileeninmd's Saturday's Critters #77. Here's momma goose and her baby on Lake Siri:

Here's a Silver-spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus):

This is a female Whitetail Dragonfly. She can be distinguished from the female 12-Spotted Skimmer "by the broken/zig-zag, not continuous, white/light line along each side of her abdomen."

Speaking of Whitetails, remember Ashburn deer? This fine fellow was seen in almost the same spot 12 days later.

I was hoping he'd move for a clearer shot, but when I came back down the trail 20 minutes later, he was still there (and keeping a watchful eye):

Here's Looking At You, Deer

My contribution to Eileeninmd's Saturday's Critters #82. I saw this big buck along the Washington and Old Dominion Trail on Wednesday.

When he got up to leave...

This is my best picture of a Snowberry Clearwing yet. The moth stopped hovering and parked on a leaf for a bit. It's my contribution to Weekend Butterfly #05 at Andyslens.

Here's Amelia!

Cacapon Mountain Streetscape

Carmi's Thematic Photographic 265 is Streetscapes. Carmi mentions an urban environment, but right now my local streets are in the woods. Here's a picture of a box turtle that Theda and I ran across on a rainy walk down the road outside the house.

These next few pictures are of deer I've seen well driving back to the house the last couple of days.

This picture doesn't qualify as streetscape. Would you believe a porchscape?

Deer Spider

My contribution to Eileeninmd's Saturday's Critters #41.

Here are a couple more pictures of the buck and doe on Cacapon Mountain.

Tiny Toads With Tiny Toes Toe The Line

My contribution to Eileeinmd's Saturday's Critters #134. I had collected seven while using the weed whacker, I was trying to make sure no tiny toads got hurt. After I was through, I managed to get one pic in before the remaining four hopped away.

Remember that deer who hung around for photos and videos while munching away in Ashburn in June? (In the middle of the poison ivy, I might add.) I took four of them, here's a third:

I'm also linking to Anni's I'd-Rather-B-Birdin'. Theda and I went to visit the Broad Branch ducks, but there was only duckweed.

How about a birdie platter? Mrs. Cardinal is sharing well with the sparrows. (The night before, Mr. Cardinal was chasing them off vigorously. Of course, when he'd pursue one a few feet away, the others would dash for the seeds.)

Some Blue Jays decided to come visit this morning, as well:

How about a profile shot, Mr. or Mrs. Jay?

Great Golden Digger Wasp

My contribution to Michelle's Nature Notes (#394). There were a couple of whitetail deer eating behind the shed in my sister's backyard, so I used the shed as cover to sneak up on them. But they took off as I pressed the shutter, so this is all I got:

The Great Golden Digger Wasp is a benign, gentle wasp currently being studied by scientists for its behavioral responses.

I'm also linking to TexWiscGirl's Good Fences #133. You've seen these horses before...
