My contribution to Michelle's Nature Notes (#378)~ Enjoy the sounds of insects.
Here is one of the sources of the summer sounds Michelle refers to, a cicada. It had recently emerged from its larval shell, so the wings are still slightly greenish (and it couldn't fly away from me...yet).
This is a Silver-spotted Skipper, Epargyreus clarus, on a white thistle flower.
Always remember to sniff the flowers!

I really like the great detail in the insect photos when viewed full size.
my sixteen yo Sissy is all about smelling the everthing
Fantastic series, I love them all.
I miss the sound of the cicadas at night, they don't live up here. But I saw a lot of skippers today, they seem to be the only butterflies fearless enough that I can get close to them. Your skipper is cute, I like their big eyes. Your dog enjoys sniffing flowers, how funny.
Those cicadas just gross me out! Though, I do like their sound!
The cicadas are icky! I like the shots of Theda smelling the flowers. Enjoy your day!
The other night while out walking the dogs, the cicadas & tree frogs were so loud we had to raise our voices to speak to each other. It was by far the loudest hum/buzz I'd ever heard. Amazing year for the noisy evening crew!
I LOVE that you found a cicada...I don't usually see them...great nature post...Michelle
