Saturday Butterflies 7.14.2012

Here's a site where you can compare butterfly species side by side. It was helpful in determining whether the big yellow butterfly was an Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail or an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.

UPDATE: Bonus Sunday Great Spangled Fritillary on Bull Thistle flower pictures.

Y'know, it occurs to me that when I was a little boy, growing up on the very fringes of the suburbs north of San Francisco, every summer there were lots of BIG, colorful butterflies.

But now I can't remember the last time I saw one.

At least I have an Ocelot, huh?

golf claps, sir.

What a useless site. Now I'll never know the airspeed velocity of an unladen Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail.

Long ago with vertigo ?

Related.

They're BOTH corporate shills.

Exactly. Nothing more than tools of Big Butterfly, LLC.

When I worked at the Clevelandia Zoo, they had lizards in the butterfly house that ate all the butterflies. True story.

Thanks, beege!

P.V., that is an awesome anecdote.

"Not only do we have burning rivers, but lizards ate all the butterflies in the butterfly house."

So we figured we'd just go ahead and let a couple dozen Honey Badgers live in the butterfly house for a while to correct the lizard problem.

Hey. What could possibly go wrong? We get most of our pest-management advice from an old woman who is noted for having once swallowed a fly...

Insects are fun to get pictures of, they look so different close up like that. Beautiful!

Those butterflies are truly beautiful. Ours in the UK have suffered greatly from the steady downpours we've had this 'summer'.

Those flowers in the Funchal market are, I think, some kind of Chrysanthemum. But I could be totally wrong and they are some exotica native to Madeira!

It is nothing short of magical that nature is filled with wonders like these. I've always loved butterflies for their ability to wow us on so many levels. Thank you for capturing them so stunningly...orange indeed!
