There were two groups of Pileated Woodpeckers visiting the feeder in the last week: a couple of smaller birds and a trio of larger ones. These are the smaller birds:
And here are the big ones. I've never seen three on one tree before.
The above three pictures were all taken through the window. Each time I'd try to sneak up to get another shot, they'd hear me right away. Finally I got this one when it was raining cats and dogs.
This video I took in April, 2011, was also shot during a rainstorm.
P.S. Here's a couple more shots of Pieris rapae on the Russian Sage.

I don't see them often, but whenever I do, it's a real treat. Those suckers a big.
Nice catch, old chum.

Beautiful birds ... they look so exotic to me - we don't have woodpeckers in this part of the world. Love the red crests - and thanks for the info link.
Man, I got totally Pileated last night. My ears are STILL ringing...
With how often they came around, I thought sure I'd get sharper pics. But they're too wary.
Three in a tree is new for me.

Russian Sage? Marxist!
That's right, R.G.
And those butterflies? Fellow travelers!

How magnifique! I do love seeing those woodpeckers again as we do not have any on the left coast.
Thank you for my morning smile Thunder. ;-)
That's weird. One of my son's books has big, red-headed woodpeckers in it and I was saying, gee, those woodpeckers seem pretty large...but I guess there are some good-sized woodpeckers out there.
Quite right.
Awesome, thunder! I love woodpeckers. Haven't seen any here yet. Had several at our old house. Used to love to hear them pecking/drilling/clobbering away!
Pilates wood-pckers are RIPPED DOOD!
And they can't fly, either.
