Henning Pfeifer said...: El Snacktator showed me the translation of the Carving "All Virtues are credible until the time that they are tested", and asked if its a wrong or a correct translation. I just copy what I answered to El: Yes, it is. "Credible" is here the translation for "Fleckfrei", very interesting. "Fleck" is a point of dirt, a bead. "befleckt" is blotted, not clean anymore. "Fleck-frei" is therefore free of dirt: credible.
My translation would be: "Every virtue is free of maculate until the moment of its test."; September 4, 2011 at 8:06 PM
Smut Clyde said...: Seemed to me that "the time that they are tested" was a weak translation of "den Augenblick der Probe"... 'the time' is vague, it could be a period of any length, while 'moment' or 'instant' has a precise sense of "credibility right up to a moment of sudden transition". So I quibbled.
