Fall Colors and Nutkin

My contribution to TexWiscGirl's Good Fences #139. Here's Nutkin...

There goes Nutkin!

Some neighbor trees are showing their fall finery:

And last but not least, the platter birds:

Half a Nutkin Fence

My contribution to TexWiscGirl's Good Fences #103. I've put up pics of this fence before, with the wind face. Here's one showing the wind chimes on the tree in front. They sound beautiful.

Here's an owl fence:

And here's Nutkin! There was a whole Nutkin, but only half was left by the time I got in focus:

Nutkin Series

Carmi's Thematic Photographic 202 is Series.

I noticed this squirrel lounging under the bird feeder earlier in the week. Then he climbed the flag pole and looked at it. Eventually, he figured out that the only way to get at it was to jump from the flag pole. A day or so later, I heard some of the local ravens on the front porch yelling their heads off. Nutkin was on the feeder, and another of his tribe was in the front lawn watching the proceedings. Now there are at least two of them raiding the feeder.

Other business: Russian Sage, Perovskia atriplicifolia

Pecking Order

My contribution to Michelle's Nature Notes (#370). Here's a Blue Dasher:

I'll run out of tiny toad pics someday. But today is not that day!

The pecking order at the seed platter is Nutkin, Chippie, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Sparrows. In fact the other day there were four Blue Jays lined up on the "landing branch" watching Chippie, who is much smaller than any of them. But Chippie has to take a back seat when Nutkin shows up.

Nutkin and Chipmunk

My contribution to Eileeninmd's Saturday's Critters #139. I don't often see Nutkin and a chipmunk together in the backyard, but here they are. (Pics are from the 2nd floor, the remote+tripod option is out for now.)

For Anni's I'd Rather B Birdin', here are Mr. Cardinal and his sparrow friends:

Last but not least, a Tiger Swallowtail on butterfly bush:

Song Sparrows and Fuzzy-Toed Nutkin

My contribution to Eileeninmd's Saturday's Critters #112. Here are some song sparrows from when the snow was still around. Both house sparrows and song sparrows join the cardinals in the backyard. (I'm also linking to Anni's I'd Rather Be Birdin'.)

Of course Nutkin gets in on the party (post title reference):

Neighborhood Animals

Kitty heard a bird!

Nutkin chose a small tree to hide in. He/she/it/squirrel was not pleased with the results.

The Frank Fetch Park hibiscus has a new flower already.

UPDATE: I hadn't included this pic so far because it isn't that sharp. On the other hand, it's the best cardinal picture I've gotten this year. They're quite camera-shy...practically the pileated woodpecker of downtown Columbus.

Spiderwort and More

Carmi's Thematic Photographic 336 is Stuff that grows
Nine months ago, Amelia was a newborn puppy. Now she's 94.7 pounds (and still growing).

Spiderwort has been blooming all over the place(s) for the last several weeks.

TexWiscGirl has Good Fences #64 up. Here's Nutkin!

Stewart M. has Wild Bird Wednesday 150. I tried to record Mr. Cardinal's song, but someone was mowing his lawn.

First Monarch Pic of 2016

My contribution to Michelle's Nature Notes (#373). From the backyard in D.C., Mr. Cardinal makes way for Nutkin.

It's not just butterflies that have been scarce in D.C. this summer. I've seen few pollinators, period. But here's a carpenter bee:

Here are a couple of pollinators from the Washington and Old Dominion Trail in Va. this morning. I've struck out on the trail a bit the last month or so, but today was great. More to come later in the week.

And at last, my first Monarch pic of 2016!

Moon and Nutkin

The full moon is tonight, officially. But last night's looked pretty good.
