My contribution to Eileeninmd's Saturday's Critters #126.

I'm also linking to Anni's I'd Rather B' Birdin'. Here are a few more pictures of the birdie party on the porch.

Ashburn Horses and Black Rat Snake

My contribution to Eileeninmd's Saturday's Critters #123. I stopped to take a picture of these horses...

And then I noticed Mr. (or Mrs.) Black Rat Snake heading across the horse trail toward the bike trail.

This snake is getting ready to shed its skin, else it wouldn't have stuck around. As it was, the bike trail is very busy (I much prefer to walk on the horse trail) and a pretty bad destination for a snake. So I stomped my feet to try to get it turned around.

Mr. Rat Snake was all, "You're not the boss of me!" And proceeded across the trail.

So I picked him up by the tail and put him back in the grass on the other side. (There was some disgruntlement, as you can see.)

And that was the end of that.

P.S. I plan to contribute to Anni's I'd Rather B Birdin', too, but I have to head back to D.C. first. P.P.S. Here are a couple more shots of the Red-bellied Woodpecker visit to the porch in W.V. early in April.

David Bowie Bird

My contribution to Eileeninmd's Saturday's Critters #121. And I"m also linking to Annii's I'd-Rather-B-Birdin. This Red-bellied Woodpecker flew in for a visit on the porch last week on Cacapon Mountain, and the light was just right.

Hairy, Red-Bellied, Downy

Michelle's Nature Notes (#347)~Rambling Woods is Nine Years Old…. Happy B-Day, Rambling Woods! These three woodpeckers all showed up at the suet feeder within six minutes yesterday.

Carmi's Thematic Photographic 364 is Tires.
Here's the right rear tire of the Thundermobile right after someone scraped it and zoomed off without stopping:

All in all, not so bad for the only vehicle vs. vehicle violence I've had with the car (a 2006 Honda Civic I bought in March of 2008).

Back To The Past Year

Carmi's Thematic Photographic 341 is The Camera. I'm going back into time for this one, because I don't have a second camera with me (and because I have some shots of an old camera from 2012 on this laptop).

Here's a picture of my Canon G12 from January, 2012 (taken with my even older Canon A710):

And here's a shot of that bird through the G12 (I was using a remote, that plus the tripod let me get close to the shy birds on the feeder):

Back to the present! I've seen some Red-winged Blackbirds fledglings by the ponds above Lake Siri. I thought at last I had a great shot of one, but I download it and his/her fuzzy downy fledgling face was behind a leaf. Oh well (pic taken with my Canon G15)...

I'm also linking to Stewart M's Wild Bird Wednesday 155.

Festivus Animals and Motivational Poster

Err, Day AFTER Festivus Animals:

I've prepared this pic instructional poster due to popular confusion regarding the Red-bellied Woodpecker's nomenclature. Sure, its red head is quite noticeable...but is it more so than that of the Red-headed Woodpecker? I'd call it the "Fancy Zebra Jacketed Woodpecker", but the Golden-fronted Woodpecker has one, too. So here we are:

Red-bellied Woodpeckers DO Have Red Bellies

Sure, the red head is much more prominent...but many woodpecker species also have red heads.
