Umbrella Girl on Labor Day

It's been a while since I made it over to Schiller Park. I think this is the first time I've seen Umbrella Girl with her umbrella in action. A plethora of butterflies were about, and even a hummingbird. (Said hummingbird refused to sit for his portrait, however.) There's a couple of butterflies left to identify, I'll get to those this evening.

UPDATE: HIT ME WITH YOUR RHYTHM STICK!

We have a ton of those little magenta, straw-looking flowers in the yard this year! Actually, we've had them before, but they never did that well. This year they really took off.

I can't believe how many leaves have fallen by Umbrella Girl! Is that due to drought? I can't believe they're turning and falling due to fall. It's too early.

Toxic umbrella fumes, worst case I've ever seen.

Remaining butterflies identified. Gorgone Checkerspot is one I've taken a picure of previously.

Eastern tailed-blue is a butterfly I'm familiar with since being a little kid.

P.S. By those little magenta, straw-looking flowers, did you mean the ones in the last three pictures, Jennifer?

According to the sign, they are Stokesia 'Klaus Jelitto'.

Even though I've seen two sides of Umbrella Girl, I don't feel like I really know her.

Yeah, I meant those. I seem to recall a different name though. I don't think I have any markers left from the ones we got.

TOXIC UMBRELLA FUMES!?!? No wonder she looks a little green.

Upon reading the description, that's got to be for a different plant. There is no way those flower heads will ever be 4 inches across... there must be another plant nearby that's got Smut Clyde/Niels Bohr flower bonces and come in ginormous.

Grizzled remembered the name... Gomphrena.

Flower changelings! Happened to me once. I planted salsify but what actually appeared in the garden was cape gooseberries.

"Gomphrena" sounds like the name of the Dark She-Elves' war leader in a Tolkein pastiche.

Her name was Gomphrena,
By Christ you should have seen her
A seasoned up hyena
Could not have been more obscener.

Last two lines are homage to Ian Drury
