Five-lined Skink and More

Eileeninmd's Saturday's Critters #73 is up.

Here is a Five-lined Skink next to the Washington & Old Dominion Trail in Ashburn, Va.:

A week ago I ran across the bunny again, this time while walking Theda. She (Theda) was thrilled!

A few more pics from Ashburn:

Mouse over pics for captions, and click them for larger versions. (For example, you can see that the beetle has hairy arms.)

Wow. Nice. When I was a little boy (single digits or so), I grew up about a block from the end of the development in my neighborhood. Beyond that were 'the hills', as in "G'bye mom, billy and me are going up in the hills". One of the standard things one did in the the hills was catch lizards. Usually they were Bluebellies, which Wiki informs me are actually "Western Fence Lizards", which were everywhere. But the real prize was a blue tailed skink. That was a MUCH cooler lizard. Of course, we'd put them in a box with holes punched in the lid and they'd die (or escape) in a few days, but the real point was catching them.

Theda's pose in her third pic is really cute. What would she do if she could chase the rabbit? I like the Five-Lined Skink, such a beautiful blue tail. We were fascinated with lizards when I was a child, we had green anoles in our yard. I wish I could see more lizards here, I did see an alligator lizard recently but didn't catch it. The beetle is such a lovely metallic green! Great photos.
