Friday night orbs

I went to Krogers on Thursday for sushi at lunchtime, via the overgrown path. Dialogue as I was leaving the store:

Voice somewhere behind me: You have a giant spider on your back!

ittdgy™³²®©, reluctantly reaching the conclusion that said comment was in fact directed at my back: What?

Kroger employee: Dude! Seriously, you have a giant spider on your back!

The culprit turned out to be a Japanese beetle, who was kindly escorted outdoors by said employee. There were effing swarms of them on the path (and I do mean effing....anyone need a picture?). Seems kind of early, but it got very hot and humid around here after winter finally wore off.

Frankly, I wouldn't consider a spider the size of a Japanese beetle to be "giant", but your mileage may vary.

If "dude" is a direct quote, it's not surprising the d00d was not up on, like, sizes & stuff.

In the small but still meaningless universe dep't., we bought sushi at Ralphs, the local Kroger subsid., just today.

That sounds like the small but still meaningless parallel universe department.

It has a dragon's head, ten spider legs, and a scaly body.

Sounds like Spider Dog...

For some reason that reminds me of Chapter Six in Locus Solus. There the plot revolves around tarot cards that play musical phrases as they are laid out, because they have been hollowed out with their flat internal cavities containing amazingly compressed music-box clockwork -- all worked by beetles within the cavities, pulling and pushing at tiny levers according to their training. Not up there with an earthquake beetle, I know.

Mind you, most things remind me of one chapter or another of Locus Solus.
