Cardinal Chaos

Chaotic is Carmi's Thematic 243
Heavy and continuous rain last week brought some chaos to the birds busy raising their chicks in our neighborhood. The azaleas were full of blossoms, and the rain caused their branches to droop. Next thing you know, fledglings were running around the yard.





That nest belonged to some sparrows (this is Mr. Sparrow). I considered putting the cardinal chick in it, but figured he/she/it/baby cardinal would hop right back out, and it was too small anyways. Plus, the parents were looking out for it, and as our back yard is Theda's back yard, I never see any cats in it.

I guess I should replant M.L. 5...it's been there over two years, and is clearly making no progress. And M.L. 3 needs a Bambi Fence™.

Six-spotted Green Tiger Beetle

The Six-spotted Green Tiger Beetle, Cicindela sexguttata, is a critter I see pretty regularly on Cacapon Mountain. SHINY!

Each larva stays in its burrow until the following year. In July it changes into a pupa (resting stage). Pupae hatch into adults in August.

Adult Six-spotted Tiger Beetles spend the day looking for food, then return to their burrow (the same one they were a larva and pupa in) at night. Adults also spend the winter in their burrows.
