Black Rat Snake Fence

My contribution to TexWiscGirl's Good Fences #116. And I'm also linking to Michelle's Nature Notes (#366).

This Black Rat Snake visited my sister's backyard on Sunday.

He (or she) was pretty mellow...didn't even get too angry when I pulled his tail to keep him from going through the fence too soon.

"Nice to see you, but I have an appointment next door."

The End.

Here are a couple pictures from the backyard in D.C. that I've had sitting around:

Carmi's Thematic Photographic 372 is Monochrome. Here's Monochrome Theda!

Last but far from least, here's another fence + Amelia:

UPDATE: By popular demand, here is Monochrome Amelia:

  1. Snakes make me cringe, even harmless ones. Love the other critters though!

  3. Beautiful snkae but not sure I'd pull his tail! Maybe just take a close look.

  4. I am trying to get over my aversion to snakes. They do a lot of good, and only a few are poison.
    Cute dogs!
Thanks for your comment on my blog. Kingbirds are very aggressive in chasing other birds (even large ones) away from their nests - so yes, tyrants!
    Have a great week-end!

  5. I take a monochrome Theda every time, but what has Rory done not to get the same treatment?

  6. Carmi's theme came out after I left Ashburn, Bob (where my sister's dogs live, as well as that snake).

    I'm back there now, though.

  8. That was a good sized snake you photographed. I don't think I would have been brave enough to touch it. Glad you were able to get photos before it slithered under the fence. Enjoyed all your other photos as well.

  10. There and Amelia look just as gorgeous in monochrome as they do in colour! But you can keep your snake! Is it poisonous?

  11. Nope! Even I don't usually pull a poisonous snake's tail.

When I was in a junior H.S., I used to work in a pet store that had both black and yellow rat snakes for sale. They might bite you if inclined. Some do, some don't. It's nothing serious.

  13. With you letting that snake crawl over your foot I assume Rat Snakes aren't poisonous. The Cardinal is beautiful. We only have 3 snake varieties here in Tasmania, Tiger Snake, Copper Head & Whip Snake & all 3 are venomous. I see a snake & I head the opposite direction.

  14. No way would I be brave enough to pull the snake by the tail!
Cool photos though but Theda & Amelia steal the show!

  19. The snake on your foot wins, and your dog is equally fabulous.
